How we review tools

How listings, verdicts, prices, and paid placements work on aigtm.tools.

How tools get listed

Tools are grouped by the job they do. Each job is a category with its own page. On a category page, a paid featured listing is pinned first. The other tools follow the order in the catalog.

A listing shows the tool name, what it does, a pricing line, a verdict, the category, and a link to the vendor site. When a pricing page URL is on file, the listing links to it. When a price has a check date, the listing shows that date.

Anyone can suggest a tool from the submit page. The form sends the suggestion for review. It does not write the catalog. A listing appears when the tool is added to the catalog. The build stops if a tool is missing a name, category, site URL, pricing line, description, or verdict.

What a verdict is

Every tool has a short verdict on its listing. The block is labeled Our verdict, and it carries the line Independent. Never paid.

The catalog marks a verdict draft until it is reviewed, then final. On import, a verdict that starts with DRAFT: is stored as draft, and that prefix is removed from the text. A verdict without the prefix is stored as final. A verdict already marked final stays final when the same text is imported again. The listing shows the verdict text. The draft or final mark stays in the catalog.

How pricing is checked

A checked price is compared with the vendor's public pricing page. data/pricing-baseline.json stores the pricing page URL, the listing text, and the date of the last check.

A script fetches each of those pages. It flags a listing when a dollar amount in the line is missing from the page, or when the page does not load.

When a vendor does not publish a price, the listing says "Pricing on request." A line that has not been checked says "Not verified; check pricing page."

When a pricing line changes, the change is logged on the New and changed page.

New and changed is the log of those price lines, plus new tools, news, and verdicts.

Paid placements are labeled Sponsored. A featured listing is pinned to the top of its category, and its outbound links use rel=sponsored. A category sponsor card is labeled Sponsored. The newsletter digest sponsor is labeled Presenting sponsor.

A sponsor cannot buy or change a verdict. The featured flag and the verdict text are separate fields. Claiming a listing does not edit the verdict either.

A category can have at most three paid spots. Featured listings and a sponsor card count toward that cap. The build stops if a category goes over it.

Advertise lists the placement options.

Corrections and suggestions

Suggest a tool on the submit page. People who work on a listed tool can claim the listing and request corrections to pricing, descriptions, and links. Claiming is free.

On a tool page, Suggest a correction emails the site contact address.
